Obituary for Mary Anne Burlbaugh

Mary Anne [Sager] Burlbaugh, 94, of New Wilmington, PA, formerly of Hermitage, PA, passed away peacefully on August 9, 2022, in Sharon Regional Medical Center following a brief illness.

Mary Anne was born April 10, 1928, in Slippery Rock, PA to Nelle [Thompson] Sager and George Sager. She grew up on Sager’s Home Acres Farm and continued a love of gardening and serving fresh vegetables into her early 80s. Mary Anne graduated from Grove City College; Also, she graduated from Yale, School of Far Eastern Languages; while stationed in Brussels, Belgium. She was a substitute high school teacher and homemaker. Together with her beloved husband, Al, she served as a Methodist missionary, in Congo, Africa. While in Africa, Al, designed and built a hospital and a school, with Mary Anne serving as the bookkeeper and teacher of ESL and a pharmacist. Together they severed nearly 18 years in the Congo.

When they returned to Pennsylvania, they once again became active members of the community. Mary Anne was a member of Hickory United Methodist Church, a member of United Methodist Women and enjoyed gardening, reading, knitting, quilting and crossword puzzles. She was an excellent seamstress.

Mary Anne is survived by two daughters, Susan Ellen Darby and her husband Les and Martha Anne Lilly and her husband Jay, all of Hermitage; a son, David Gregg Burlbaugh and his wife Patty of McDonough, GA; a sister, Effie Young of Butler, PA; a brother, Dr John Sager of Titusville, FL, nine grandchildren and fifteen great-grandchildren.

Mary Anne was preceded in death by her parents George and Nelle Sager and her husband, Alfred Gregg Burlbaugh whom she married August 19, 1949, and who passed away March 15, 2010.

A Memorial Service will be held Friday, September 2, 2022, at 11:00 AM at Hickory United Methodist Church 240 N. Hermitage Rd., Hermitage PA.
